Trent Valley Archives (TVA) is gearing up for an engaging new season of talks, walks, and tours, starting with a compelling presentation on the significant Quaker fire of 1916. The event, open to all, will take place on Thursday, April 25th, from 7-9 pm at the Highland Park Cemetery Visitor Centre, located at 2510 Bensfort Road, Peterborough.
This year’s featured speaker, Matthew Flagler, author of “Held to the Fire,” has deep roots in East City and a personal connection to the tragic event. Flagler’s great grandfather, Dennis O’Brien, was among those who lost their lives in the explosion at Quaker Oats on December 11, 1916. “Held to the Fire” delves into the details of this devastating incident, unveiling a story of resilience and bravery amidst adversity.
In what promises to be a fast-paced and interactive session, Flagler will share insights into the challenges of writing about an event that occurred over a century ago. He will discuss the inspiration behind “Held to the Fire,” offer select readings from the book, and field questions from the audience.
Refreshments will be served during the event, and copies of Matthew Flagler’s book will be available for purchase on-site.
Anyone interested in attending can contact TVA at 705-745-4404, email admin@trentvalleyarchives.com, or visit the website trentvalleyarchives.com/events.
