The Art Gallery of Peterborough kicked off its 50th-anniversary celebrations on Friday, unveiling a vibrant lineup of events scheduled throughout the year to commemorate its founding in 1974.
Established through Letters Patent from the Province of Ontario on March 15, 1974, the Art Gallery of Peterborough has since evolved into a dynamic cultural hub. Over the years, it has continually showcased remarkable artistry, offered educational programs for all ages, and curated collections reflecting the vibrancy of the community and contemporary art trends.
Debby Keating, a member of the Board of Directors at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, “This is a chance for us to recognize and thank our community, our artists, our volunteers, our talented staff, and our partners at the City of Peterborough who have been supporting the Art Gallery of Peterborough for 50 years.”
Mayor Jeff Leal applauded the Gallery’s contributions to the cultural landscape of Peterborough, acknowledging its role as a cornerstone of the region’s artistic community. “Peterborough is a regional hub for the arts, with the Art Gallery of Peterborough at its foundation,” remarked Mayor Leal. “Thank you to the Art Gallery of Peterborough, and I look forward to joining you as we mark the Gallery’s 50th anniversary this year.”
The celebratory events include current exhibitions such as “seams and strata” and “For Posterity: works from the Permanent Collection,” offering visitors a glimpse into the Gallery’s diverse collection and legacy. Additionally, the Gallery is gearing up for future events like the “Galleria Extravaganza: The Best Sale of the Last (Half) Century,” scheduled for April 5-7, promising a treasure trove of artful finds.
Looking ahead, the Gallery has planned a range of activities, including a 50th Anniversary Celebration at the McDonnel Street Community Centre on August 20, featuring special guests and reminiscences. Furthermore, an “It’s All About ART Fundraising Auction” will take place on October 26, promising a nostalgic journey back to the ’70s with bell bottoms, disco music, and exquisite artworks.
The Gallery will also host exhibitions by local artists and participate in the 40th Anniversary of the Kawartha Autumn Studio Tour in September.
