Excitement is already building for the upcoming 23rd Annual Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival.
Following a record breaking 2023, organizers are now revving up for this year’s event which is set for Saturday, June 8th, at Del Crary Park.
As the clock ticks towards February 25th, the day registration opens, teams are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to secure their spots in the annual event, with the first three teams to sign up receiving a bonus lake practice, courtesy of the organizers.
Last year’s festival made waves, bringing in a impressive $290,025.18, marking their largest donation ever. The funds will be directed to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) for equipment aimed at screening, diagnosing, and treating cancers.
In a press release, Festival Chair Michelle Thornton credited the vibrant community spirit for this achievement, highlighting how every dollar raised makes a significant impact in the battle against cancer.
Ann Stabler, President of the Survivors Abreast Dragon Boat Team, beamed with pride about the team’s committed dedication to breast cancer awareness and fundraising for the PRHC, while underscoring the importance of early detection and the pivotal role played by the PRHC Foundation in providing top-tier cancer care locally.
President and CEO of the PRHC Foundation, Lesley Heighway, expressed gratitude to all the participants and supporters, stressing how the festival’s proceeds fuel the acquisition of cutting-edge equipment and technology for cancer treatment. Heighway emphasizes that the festival isn’t just a day of fun but a lifeline for many in the community battling cancer.
With cancer touching so many lives, the Dragon Boat Festival stands as a beacon of hope and unity, igniting a flame of determination within the community to stand strong and fight back against this relentless adversary, ensuring that no one faces the battle alone.
