The need for speed has landed a young driver in hot water, after an officer on traffic patrol in the area of Hilliard Street and Marina Boulevard recorded a vehicle going 97km/hr in a posted 40km/hr Community Safety Zone.
An 18-year-old G2 driver was charged with stunt driving, issued a 30-day license suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.
A Community Safety Zone is designated for a lower speed limit and means an increase in fines for related offences such as speeding. For example, driving 20km/hr over the posted limit would cost a driver $180 instead of $95.
The Peterborough Police Service wants to remind residents that Hilliard Street and several other streets in Peterborough, which have schools on them, have now been designated as Community Safety Zones.
