One of the greatest players to ever pick up a lacrosse stick, not just in Peterborough but in the world, has called it a career. Peterborough native Shawn Evans announced his retirement from the National Lacrosse League earlier today on his Facebook page:
“Today is the day I’m hanging them up and retiring from the NLL after 18 season. My dream as a kid turned into reality 19 years ago. Many memories made and friendships gained throughout my career. Truly grateful for the sport and what it has provided me and my family. My family and my health and most important as I step into my next chapter. Truly blessed by the support of the lacrosse community over the years. Thank you to my family, friends, teammates and fans for all the great memories. Looking forward to continuing to grow the game and the best sport around. #15”
Evans started his career in Rochester, after the Knighthawks selected him second overall in 2005 (Brodie Merrill was number one), followed by stints in Calgary, New England, Buffalo, Halifax and Vancouver. He leaves the NLL with the ninth most goals in league history (479), fourth most assists (879) and the fifth most points (1358).
The league’s 2013 and 2015 MVP also has the second highest penalty minutes in league history, with 667; 18 minutes behind the all-time leader Billy Dee Smith and 40 ahead of another Peterborough native, Kyle Laverty, who sits in third on that list.
Aside from the lasting mark he has made in the National Lacrosse League’s history books, the superstar will be remembered for his exceptional skill, grittiness and passion for the game. There will never be another lacrosse player like Shawn Evans.
