The City of Peterborough initiated its revamped waste collection program yesterday, introducing a weekly Green Bin service and requiring the use of clear bags for curbside garbage collection. The first day of collection witnessed a strong response, with around 85% of eligible households in the Tuesday collection area putting their Green Bin at the curb for pick up.
The new program promotes environmental sustainability by diverting more waste from landfills, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing worker safety. Councillor Gary Baldwin, Chair of the City’s Waste Management Portfolio, commended the community’s efforts and encouraged residents to adapt to the changes.
Blue box recycling remains unchanged and yard waste will continue to be collected seasonally. The City has also implemented a Waste Collection By-Law to ensure compliance with the program’s regulations.
