When Janet Dawson and Kevin Cornish purchased Indian River Acres in 2010, they furthered a family farm tradition that has now spanned three generations.
Purchased in 1954 by Dawson’s grandfather, the farm’s focus was beef cattle and hay production for decades. It was there that Dawson grew up, helping with the chores and showing cattle at fairs, planting the seed for what she would one day do fulltime.
Since starting with sweet corn, Indian River Acres now grows garlic, pumpkins and gourds, beans, beets, potatoes, tomatoes, zucchini and, more recently, has produced pickling-related food.
Named the 2022 Peterborough County Farm Family of the Year, Janet and Kevin have also experienced the joy of raising their kids Liam and Lucas in a farm setting, something that really hit home during the pandemic.
