The Fleming Phoenix soccer teams travelled to Northern Ontario this past weekend to face the Cambrian Golden Shield on Saturday and then the Sault College Cougars on Sunday.
On Saturday, the men’s team was defeated by Cambrian 8-0, with Phoenix goalkeeper Gabriel Nadeau facing 20 shots in the game. The women’s team was defeated 10-0 by Cambrian in their Saturday game. Goalkeeper Eve Spinks faced 25 shots in that game.
On Sunday, the women’s team earned their first win of the season as they defeated Sault College 4-1 with three goals from Emma Twohey (#11) and one goal from Gemini Prue (#20). Eve Spinks played well in the net for the Fleming Phoenix, stopping five of the six shots on goal.
The men’s team tied the Sault College Cougars 2-2 in their match-up on Sunday. Fleming Phoenix goals were scored by Anthony Wonda (#12) and Nathaniel Reid-Coke (#9). Goalkeeper Gabriel Nadeau played well for the Fleming Phoenix, stopping nine of the 11 shots he faced.
The men’s and women’s teams play next on Wednesday, October 4 against the Centennial Colts at the Colts Pitch at Progress Campus. The women take the field at 6 pm and the men play at 8:15 pm.
Women’s Rugby Sevens
The Fleming Phoenix Women’s Rugby Sevens were also on the road this past weekend, playing three matches on Saturday.
The Phoenix lost 38-10 to the Loyalist Lancers in their first match. Scoring for Fleming was Theda Anthony (#13) and Sydney Hudson (#10).
In their second match, the Phoenix lost to the Algonquin Wolves 17-7. Montana Rank (#8) was the lone Phoenix to score in that match.
In their third match, the Phoenix Women’s Rugby Sevens lost to the St. Lawrence Surge 29-5. Scoring for Fleming was Hollie Phillips (#3).
Next action for the Fleming Phoenix Women’s Rugby Sevens will be October 14 and 15 when they host teams from Durham, Seneca, Conestoga and Humber colleges.
