While it’s hard to believe that in these enlightened times we need to be reminded not to leave out pets in the car, unfortunately that is the case.
To that end, the Ontario SPCA and the Ontario Humane Society have co-launched a campaign aimed at ensuring pets’ safety, particularly during the hot summer months. At the centre of the campaign is the No Hot Pets Pledge, which pet owners can take online.
Bonnie Bishop, SPCA east regional manager for community outreach, says the number of incidents involving pets left in vehicles remains high.
As part of the campaign, pet owners and the general public at large are being asked to also press their local municipalities for a bylaw related to the leaving of pets in vehicles.
Bishop urges pet owners to plan ahead when venturing out, making sure their pets can accompany them once their vehicle is parked.
Bishops adds those who see an animal that is in distress in a park vehicles should not break a window to gain entry as that is illegal. Instead, she call Provincial Animal Welfare Services at 1-833-9ANIMAL. If the animal is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
