This Father’s Day weekend, families across Ontario have the perfect opportunity to bond over the age-old tradition of fishing. As a gesture of celebration for fathers, fishing enthusiasts, and nature lovers, the provincial government has declared this weekend a free fishing period.
The Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, Graydon Smith, expressed his enthusiasm for this family-friendly event, stating, “Fishing is a great family pastime. With fishing being free this Father’s Day weekend, it’s a great time to get out on one of Ontario’s lakes or rivers and enjoy this wonderful sport.”
During this special weekend, anglers can cast their lines and try their luck at catching various species, including yellow perch, common carp, northern pike, lake trout, and walleye. It is essential, however, for participants to adhere to the specified catch limits for each species and take note of any exceptions that may apply to certain water bodies. Detailed information can be found in the Fishing Regulations Summary.
While fishing is free during this designated period, it is crucial to remember to comply with all conservation license catch limits. Additionally, anglers must carry identification issued by the provincial or federal government, which displays their name and date of birth.
This event serves as a precursor to the upcoming Family Fishing Week, which will be held during Canada Day from July 1 to July 9. Families are encouraged to mark their calendars for this extended period of free fishing, providing even more opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors together.
Outside of the designated free fishing periods, most Canadians between the ages of 18 and 65 are required to possess an Outdoors Card and a fishing license to fish in Ontario. However, veterans and active members of the Canadian Armed Forces residing in the province are eligible to enjoy recreational fishing free of charge throughout the year.
Recreational fishing holds significant economic value for Ontario, with approximately 1.2 million licensed anglers contributing a staggering $1.75 billion annually to the province’s economy.
This Father’s Day weekend, families can create lasting memories while partaking in the joy of fishing. The opportunity to fish for free not only adds a special touch to the celebration but also encourages individuals to appreciate Ontario’s abundant lakes and rivers. Grab your fishing gear and seize the chance to create unforgettable experiences with your loved ones amidst the serenity of nature.
