Peterborough Rotary Club’s Literacy Committee beat out the media team in the Media vs. Rotarian Spelling Bee.
Fortunately for Team Media, FREQ 90.5’s Graham Elliott hung around as the last remaining media personality to be eliminated. Other media representatives included FreshRadio’s Dani Guppy, KawarthaNow & Oldies 96.7’s Paul Rellinger, and GlobalNews’ Caley Bedore.
Despite the tough loss the media got some nice praise from event MC, Catherine Hanrahan.
Amongst the banter between My Broadcasting Company, and Corus representatives, the Rotary Club proved they wanted to full-blown glory, continuing the contest two rounds after the whole media team was eliminated.
This promotional event was a great chance for media personalities and Rotary Club members to have a laugh, and celebrate the beginning of the Children’s Spelling Bees happening around the region.
Hanrahan said these Spelling Bees are about growing students’ confidence, and nurture their passions for literacy.
Around 4,200 students are preparing for the mini-Spelling Bees held at schools all over Peterborough Region, leading up to a contest for the Top 150 finalists from two divisions.
Students as young as nine-years-old will compete in the Junior Division from grades 4-6, and students grades 7-8 will compete in the Senior Division.
Both divisions will compete for experience packages from Trent Excalibur Camp, and Peterborough’s School of Art amongst other prizes, like brand-new iPads, and new bikes to kick off the Spring season.
The 9th Annual Rotary Club Spelling Bee will be broadcasted live on YourTV, and parents are welcomed to join the event at the Whetung Theatre at Fleming College on May 13th. Beverages and pizza will be provided for contestants.
