With a grim COVID-related anniversary fast approaching, new data released by Peterborough Public Health is reminding us that the virus remains present in the region.
It was on March 12th, 2020 that the first local case of COVID-19 was reported when a man in his 30s, who had travelled to Spain and Portugal, presented himself at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. After testing positive and being treated for fever and a dry cough, he was discharged the same day and went into self-isolation.
Over the three years since, 11,084 city and county residents have tested positive for the virus, with 136 of those cases resulting in death. As of March 8th, 300 known active cases were reported.
The COVID-19 risk index remains at moderate but PRHC has seen seven new virus-related admissions over the past week. In addition, virus outbreaks are ongoing at six local institutions, five of those being retirement homes.
