A survey conducted by Trent University’s Research for Social Change Lab has identified important actions needed to be taken to address Peterborough’s ongoing housing and homelessness crisis.
Deemed a priority by the 98 respondents – all current or recent employees with the city’s housing, homelessness and social service sectors – is increasing the city’s stock of rent geared-to-income housing and rental supplements; advocating the Province for higher social assistance rates; and creating more supportive housing.
Lab director and professor Dr. Naomi Nichols says the survey is part of a larger project tackled by her students, many of whom have lived experience of homelessness.
Dr. Nichols says as daunting as implementing real solutions is, the lab’s work has reinforced something fact that buoys both her and her students.
Moving forward, Dr. Nichols says the lab’s findings, including the survey results, will be shared more broadly with the community at large.
The lab’s research is supported by Reaching Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy and the United Way of Peterborough and District.
