Baseball America has announced Peterborough native Greg Hamilton as their 2022 Tony Gwynn Award winner, in recognition of his lifetime achievement and contributions to the game of baseball.
Hamilton’s involvement with Baseball Canada spans over four decades, serving as General Manager for five World Baseball Classic (WBC) events, two Olympics, as well as three Pan-Am games, winning two gold medals and a silver medal along the way.
Hamilton, who currently serves as Coach and Director for Baseball Canada’s national teams, says that winning this prestigious award is an honour.
Growing up in Peterborough, Hamilton was a multi-sport athlete, playing hockey in the winters and baseball in the summers. He later attended Princeton University in New Jersey where he played both sports, before deciding that baseball was where his heart was.
Being heavily involved in Baseball Canada’s junior programs, he’s worked with several players who have gone on to have successful big league and collegiate careers, something Hamilton says has been a gratifying experience.
Some of the names he’s helped develop include 2006 American League MVP Justin Morneau, former MLB All-Star Russell Martin and 2004 National League Rookie of the Year Jason Bay.
