Peterborough mayor Jeff Leal has targeted Ashburnham Ward councillor Gary Baldwin to serve as first deputy mayor during this term of council.
Baldwin, who was re-elected to a third term in October, brings eight years of council experience to the position. Noting he would assume Mayor Leal’s responsibilities in the event he’s unable to carry them out, Councillor Baldwin says it’s not a token posting.
Councillor Baldwin says what the public sees is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the responsibilities of city councillors.
As for priorities as council begins its term, Councillor Baldwin says addressing homelessness and shelter challenges is one but there is another just as daunting.
Mayor Leal’s recommendations for all portfolios and committee positions will go before council December 5th when it meets as the general committee. That includes a recommendation that Town Ward councillor Joy Lachica serve as second deputy mayor.
