Peterborough’s mayor is about to do one final thing this term; declare a state of emergency on housing and homelessness.
Diane Therrien made it known she plans to make the declaration at the end of a special council meeting held last night, following the likes of Ottawa, Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.
Therrien adds she is taking the step to ensure that no one in our community is unable to access warm indoor space this fall and winter.
The move isn’t expected to allow the city to access new funding or spend its money because we are in a lame duck period ahead of the municipal election on October 24th.
CAO Sandra Clancy says there are rules in the Municipal Act curbing the ability of city council and senior staff to spend money during the lame duck period.
