History will likely be made at the Peterborough Memorial Centre tonight as Peterborough Lakers superstar Shawn Evans is just one point away from passing John Tavares for the number one spot on the all-time Mann Cup points list.
He entered the 2022 Mann Cup in second spot, 25 points behind Tavares, but with 25 points in the first four games of the series the two lacrosse legends are now tied atop that list with a chance for him to beat the record tonight.
Evans admits that passing Tavares would be a great accomplishment but his focus right now is on his team winning their fourth Mann Cup in a row.
Evans, who has played seven less games than the retired Tavares and also missed two full seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has 47 goals and 155 assists in 46 Mann Cup games. Another unique thing about Evans’ career is that he has scored every point as a Peterborough Laker while Tavares played for several teams during his career, including Brampton, Victoria, Six Nations and Peterborough.
Needless to say this record is no small feat but to put it in perspective, the first box lacrosse Mann Cup was played in 1932, with countless players competing for the Canadian championship, including some of the biggest names the game of lacrosse has ever produced; one more point for Evans will solidify him as the highest point getter in the Cups 90 year indoor history.
The question now isn’t if he’ll break the record, its when. His first opportunity to do so will be tonight at 8pm when the Lakers face the Thunder in game 5. The series is tied at 2-2.
