Brett Bjorgan has been a leader throughout his well-rounded and varied sports career in Peterborough. Now, as a wide receiver with the University of Windsor Lancers, he’s determined to take his knowledge on the field and in the classroom to help mentor the next generation of athletes.
A Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School grad and Ennismore resident, Bjorgan will play his second season with the Lancers this coming fall. He’s found his football and scholastic home with the U of Windsor, saying it’s been a great experience.
“Holy Cross, the high school I went to, we made it to OFSAA at the senior level for the very first time in history. So, I think I got a lot of looks there and word must have got around to the Windsor coach that I was still getting looked at. It was a pretty tough two years of not having football. But luck kinda swung my way. They got in contact with me, they had a really good program I was interested in and so things kind of just went from there,” said Bjorgan.
“I’m really glad I chose Windsor. Windsor’s a great school, studying human kinetics, which is a really good program. I love the guys here and so far I’m having a really great experience,” he added.
Bjorgan said he plans to get his degree in human kinetics, majoring in movement science, which he hopes to teach after graduation from the U. of Windsor. As well, he plans to continue to coach and train outside of teaching.
“I don’t know how it will work in the future, but in my mind I’m looking to teach during the day and coach or train during the evening. That would be pretty much the perfect scenario if I could do that,” he said.
Bjorgan admits that football was on the periphery during much of his youth, as hockey was his sport of choice. But, he recalls his father signing him up for Kinsmen Minor Football League camp in the summer going into Grade 5. Initially, he wasn’t too pleased about it.
