A group of representatives from different lacrosse organizations in Peterborough are getting ready to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the sport in the Lift Lock city.
The game began here in 1872 with the first teams the Red and Blue Rosettes who merged to become the Red Stockings. Peterborough won its first championship five years later and since that time has won 29 senior and junior national championships and more than 150 provincial titles.
Chairman of the organizing committee Tim Barrie says it’s a sport that has brought lots of success to Peterborough.
When it comes to the history of the sport, Barrie says a big part of its success has been parents passing the tradition down to their kids.
The week of celebration will include a number of different lacrosse organizations, which Barrie says was a priority to get as many people involved.
Barrie says there’s a number of events being planned for the last week of June to celebrated 150 years since the first lacrosse game played locally, which will be announced in the coming months.
