A new COVID-19 antiviral treatment can help treat people who have caught the virus and are at risk, but there’s no much supply in Ontario.
Peterborough Public Health Medical Officer of Health Dr. Thomas Piggott says treatment needs to be done quickly in order for the antiviral to work its best.
The treatment, which is produced by Pfizer and called Paxlovid, will see 10,800 doses coming to Ontario.
MPP Dave Smith says because of the limited supply, they’ll have to be picky about who can get the treatment.
Because of the limited supply, Dr. Piggott says this shouldn’t be seen as a reason not to get a vaccine, as being able to get the antiviral won’t be a sure thing.
Locally, there have been 51 deaths in the Peterborough region since March 2020.
