2021 marks 100 years that the poppy has symbolized remembrance for Canadians, as it’s worn as a show of respect near Remembrance Day every year.
Garden Expert Mark Cullen says it all started with a poem.
Cullen says poppies blooming is actually quite rare, but it was their resilience during the war that led to them blooming, thus creating a symbol of remembrance.
For a limited time, you can purchase a pin reminiscent of the first Remembrance Poppy that was distributed after the First World War. Assembled in Canada, this commemorative pin stems approximately 2.5″ long and retails for $9.95 with all proceeds going to the Legion.
