A local hockey standout has died at the age of 18.
Jacob Downey, who received a Peterborough Petes Education Fund Minor Hockey Scholarship, passed away on Wednesday after a medical emergency.
Downey was in his first year of studies in kinesiology in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen’s University with a goal of pursuing a career in sports medicine.
In a statement, the Peterborough Minor Hockey Council AAA Petes said:
“Jacob was an Alumni and made excellent contributions on many levels. His hard work on the ice was also reflected in his studies as he was named a recipient of the Peterborough Petes Education Fund Minor Hockey Scholarship program which he was utilizing as a student with Queen’s University. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time and his past teammates will remember him as both a great player and friend.”
