While the Liberal Government will return to the House of Commons with a minority government, the representatives for the three area ridings, will be sitting on the opposite side of the house.
In Peterborough-Kawartha, Liberal incumbent Maryam Monsef came out with an early lead, but the page quickly turned, and Conservative candidate Michelle Ferreri took the lead and never looked back.
Ferreri was named the winner, winning by a little more than 3000 votes.
She explains why she thinks she won this election.
Ferrari says the win wasn’t about her, it’s about the riding.
Since 1962, this is only the second time that the MP was not a member of the governing party. Peterborough has long been considered a bellwether riding, which means that whatever party wins government, Peterborough’s representative was from that party. The only other time an opposing party won in this riding, was in 1980 with Bill Domm winning for the Progressive Conservatives….Pierre Trudeau was elected Prime Minister with the Liberals.
In defeat, Monsef thanked supporters and says it’s been a successful run.
In Northumberland-Peterborough South, incumbent Philip Lawrence will return to Ottawa. His Liberal opponent Alison Lester held an early lead, but Lawrence crept back out in front, and won with nearly 5000 votes separating the two.
In Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock Conservative incumbent Jamie Schmale will also return to Ottawa. He had an early, and decisive win in his riding. This is Schmale’s third term as the MP for the riding.
