After news earlier this week that US Olympian Simone Biles pulled out of competition because of mental health struggles, more and more athletes are taking notice.
Manager of Community Engagement and Education with the Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Jack Veitch says it’s important to remember that athletes need to take care of their minds as well as their bodies.
He says he hopes Biles’ decision to pull out of Olympic competitions because of mental health will set an example for other athletes to take mental health seriously.
Veitch also works as a Mental Health Coach with the Peterborough Petes, and adds that it’s important to have mental health in check to perform your best physically. He says the pressures athletes face at any level can often lead to anxiety, and being able to self-regulate is important in high-pressure situations.
