St. Peter’s High School Track Coach Julie Vallieres isn’t shy about sharing her struggles with mental illness with her students, which is something she wishes she had when she was younger.
Vallieres was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder seven years ago after having stretches where she would feel fine, and then in a depressed state or dealing with anxiety. It was then she heard about the local Canadian Mental Health Association branch and more local resources.
Today, she is a pillar in her school’s community and is open with her mental health with students, reminding them that she’s always there for them if they need it. She says having someone to turn to is something that not everyone has, so she wants to be that person for anyone that needs it.
Vallieres was recently selected to take part in the 2021 New York City Marathon, being one of six teachers from Canada selected. She says staying active has always helped her with her mental health.
