A Peterborough man is facing a number of charges after incidents over the last couple days.
On Sunday just before 10:00pm police were called to a shelter on Brealey Drive for a male who had been smoking in a washroom located inside the shelter, was refusing to leave the property and causing issues with staff.
Police say the man became verbally aggressive with officers, continued to refuse to leave and was arrested. While in custody at the police station the accused spat in the cell area and spat towards officers.
As a result of the investigation, 26-year-old Jesse Dean Rowe was arrested and charged with the following:
- Assault peace officer
- Mischief under $5,000
The accused was also charged with several Provincial Offence Notices including the following:
- Fail to leave premises when directed – Trespass to Property Act
- Engage in prohibited activity on premise – Trespass to Property Act
- Cause a nuisance – public disturbance – Public Nuisance Bylaw
- Smoke tobacco in prohibited place – Smoke Free Ontario Act
Yesterday morning, Rowe was being released from custody and his behavior reportedly escalated. The accused yelled derogatory names at an officer, spat on the wall and door frame and then threw a cellphone charging cord at an officer striking the officer. The accused was apprehended by officers and allegedly caused serious injuries to one of the officers. Peterborough Paramedics attended to provide medical assistance to the officer, who also required treatment at hospital. This incident has been classified as a hate crime.
As a result, Rowe was also charged with:
- Assault peace officer causing bodily harm
- Mischief under $5,000
- Fail to comply with a probation order
The accused was held in custody and appeared in court via video appearance. While in custody the accused spat on an officer and is further charged with:
- Assault peace officer
- Fail to comply with a probation order
Rowe is being held in custody and is scheduled to make another court appearance on April 9.
