The Ontario Minor Hockey Association is supporting Hockey Canada in their decision to replace traditional names for minor hockey age groups.
Director of Communications Matt Rhodes says the terms midget, novice, peewee, atom and bantam will be replaced with age descriptive categories from U-7 to U-21. He adds the changes will help attract new hockey players by removing some of the language barriers.
Rhodes says over the past several years the Ontario Minor Hockey Association has made enhancements to technology to improve player safety. Rhodes says they’re seeing the benefits on the administration side when it comes to tracking information and analytics.
Rhodes says this means there’s no delay in the transfer of information and they can better track head contact and trainer on-ice visits.
