If there’s one woman who may be the most well-known in Peterborough, it’s Diane Therrien.
Therrien is the Mayor of Peterborough after a landslide victory in the October 2018 election, earning nearly 69 percent of the vote.
Since taking office, she’s delivered on six of her 39 policy issues mentioned during her mayoral campaign.
Prior to her time as Mayor, Therrien served four years as Town Ward councilor and a Policy Advisor in the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs.
Therrien says some of the programs she was working at while at Trent University got her interested in politics, which led to her attending council meetings regularly.
For any young women entering politics, Therrien’s advice is to have supporters who always have your back, but won’t be afraid to challenge you if needed.
She also says you need to be confident talking to people, whether it be knocking on doors while campaigning or listening to concerns of citizens.
