Members of the local lacrosse community are rallying around the family of a young player who died in a motor vehicle collision following a weekend tournament.
A fundraising campaign has been launched to support the family of Eric Hainer, a U22 player with the Kawartha Fury lacrosse organization, who was killed while travelling home after competing in the team’s inaugural Medicine Cup tournament.
The fundraiser was organized by family friend Lesley Kirton, who said the goal is to help ease financial pressures on Hainer’s parents, Janice Currie and Mike Hainer, as they cope with the sudden loss of their son.
“No family should have to worry about finances during a time like this,” the campaign states.
In a statement released by the Kawartha Fury, the organization described Hainer as a dedicated teammate whose impact on the club will not be forgotten.
The team noted that Hainer scored both his first and final goals for the Fury during the Medicine Cup, making his contributions to the tournament a lasting part of the organization’s history.
The announcement of his death prompted an outpouring of condolences from teammates, coaches, opponents and members of the broader sporting community.
The campaign continues to accept donations. For more information click here.
