The wrecking ball could soon be coming for the old Montreal House building at the corner of King and Aylmer.
At council last night, the decision was made to remove the property from the Heritage Register and not designate it under the Ontario Heritage Act.
Mayor Diane Therrien believes this is a good move.
One argument for keeping the building, was that it is in Gothic Revival style and one of the few remaining hotels of the mid-1800s that provided semi-permanent residence for the local workforce.
Councillor Dean Pappas doesn’t think this is the right step.
Ashburnham Realty has plans to put up a mixed-use building that would include 75 affordable residential units.
