Memories of the last Leafs captain to hoist the Stanley Cup are continuing to be shared all across the area.
George Armstrong, known affectionately as ‘The Chief’, died last weekend at the age of 90.
His son Brian lives in Peterborough and he tells PTBO Today that his father was very proud of his heritage.
George Armstrong won four Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs, including in 1967 – the last time the franchise won the championship. Brian says he remembers actually going on the ice in ’67 after the final buzzer.
‘The Chief’ played 21 seasons with Toronto tallying 713 career points, good for 5th all time in team history. Among other accomplishments, he’s also played the most games for the Maple Leafs in franchise history. Armstrong was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.
